PDO olive oils in Europe

With over 40 per cent of global olive oil production, Europe is now home to over a hundred Protected Designations of Origin for olive oil — a figure that reflects a clear commitment: to preserve age-old diversity and the terroirs that sustain it.

Together, these designations reflect the diversity of climates, olive varieties and agricultural traditions that have shaped the Mediterranean landscape for millennia.

PDO: accurate and personalised identification

For each of the olive-growing areas with Protected Designation of Origin status (PDO), the following have been identified:

  • The terroirs offering the most favourable conditions for olive growing and where olive cultivation has been the most consistent. Olive trees several hundred years old can thus be found in all the areas identified under PDO.
  • The specific variety or varieties of the area.
  • Traditional cultivation, production and processing practices (planting density per hectare, pruning, harvest date, etc.). The identification of these practices serves the dual purpose of documenting and preserving traditional know-how, whilst respecting the landscape and the environment.
  • The distinctive character of the olive oil. The establishment of a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for olive oil or table olives constitutes official recognition of the distinctive character of these products, a character derived from their origin. Compliance with the rules laid down by decree (as set out above) enables this distinctive character to be expressed.
